In addition to his literary works, Wu was also known for his contributions to education and public service. He founded the Shandong University of Art and Science in 1988 and served as its president until his death. He also served as the vice president of the Communist Party of China from 1990 to 1992.

Despite his success, Wu faced criticism during his lifetime. Some people accused him of being too critical of government policies and of lacking in artistic talent. However, his work continues to be celebrated today, and he remains one of the most important figures in Chinese literature and culture.
